Adelaide Labille-Guiard (1749-1803) was a French history and portrait painter. Born in Paris, thedaughter of Monsieur Labille, a haberdasher who owned a shop named'A La Toilette' situated in the rue neuve des PetitsChamps, where young Jeanne Bécu ( the future Madame duBarry) worked and became good friends with her. She studiedminiature painting with François-Elie Vincent and oils withhis son François-André. Her early works wereexhibited at the Académie de Saint-Luc, and after it closedin 1776, at the Salon de la Correspondance.She marriedLouis-Nicolas Guiard in 1769, but separated from him in 1777.Thereafter, she earned a living by teaching painting.   more from wikipedia »
