Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was a German painter and printmaker in woodcut and engraving. He was born Lucas Sunder at Kronach in upper Franconia, and learned the art of drawing from his father. Cranach's chief occupation was that of portrait painting, but was equally successful with his woodcuts- which had both religious and mythological themes.   more from wikipedia »
